Philippines: One Year After Typhoon Haiyan, 13 Employees Took Part in Rebuilding a School

January 29, 2013

From 20 to 22 November 2014, 13 ambassadors/employees from the Sofitel Plaza Manilla took part in rebuilding a school on Busuanga Island in the west of the Philippines, which was devastated by Typhoon Haiyan in 2013.

They became involved alongside the NGO ABS-CBN Foundation, which aims to protect children, education and the environment, but also takes action in reconstruction projects following humanitarian disasters.
After flying to Busuanga Island, the team from the Sofitel Plaza Manilla started renovating the classrooms. The Sofitel ambassadors/employees did not think twice before climbing on the tables to hammer nails into the ceiling! They designed t-shirts especially for the occasion with the slogan “Moving People with Magnifique Moments”.

They did not pause during their morning break and made the most of this calmer time to distribute snacks to 100 children in the surrounding villages devastated by the typhoon. They continued their action by replanting trees around the classrooms as all plant life had been destroyed by the typhoon.

Solidarity Accor has supported ABS-CBN Foundation since 2014 and financed the building of this school, which was an initiative driven by the employees from the Sofitel Plaza Manilla

Bing Lingao - Director of Sales

“The activity was an eye opener for me knowing that even they had the funds for the construction, what was currently needed was the manpower to build the classrooms.”

Belmor De Pablo - Bellman

“My family in Aklan was struck by Typhoon Yolanda [Typhoon Haiyan locally called like this] last year. […] This is my simple way of saying thank you, by paying it forward and helping those who are also hit by the calamity. It was a wonderful experience seeing happy faces receiving help from us. It was a challenging task but worthy of all the sweat and time I’ve spent with the people of Busuanga.”
