PCA and ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation join forces for farmers affected by Typhoon Yolanda

March 18, 2014

March 2014- Quezon City. Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) and ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation, Inc. (ALKFI) sealed their partnership to help restore the livelihood of the farmers affected by Typhoon Yolanda.Piloting the project in the areas of Basey, Sta. Rita, Marabut in Samar and Dulag in Leyte, the partnership will conduct clearing operation, replanting, reproduction, technology and technical assistance to the group of farmers in the said area.

With the full support from Department of Agriculture, PCA will provide fertilizers to revive the crops that are damaged during the typhoon and will also give seedlings of potatoes, sweet potatoes, cassava, pinakbet and more for intercropping, the process of growing two or more crops in proximity. They will also conduct trainings that will help the farmers augment their production and income from their crops. “Ang replanting medyo matagal ang resulta, mga 7 taon bago mamungga ang ating coconut trees. Pero ito intercropping na gagawin natin, kinakailangan nang simulan dahil yaan ay pantawid gutom. Madadama na ng ating mga coconut farmers sa loob ng isang hanggang dalawang buwan and resulta.” Euclides G. Forbes, Administrator, PCA.

(Replanting may take around 7 years before we get the crops. Intercropping is more immediate and will also serve as everyday food for the farmers so we hope to start this as soon as possible. They can already enjoy the results of intercropping after 1-2 months.)

ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya, through the use of their resources, commits to community organize and handle the sales and marketing of the crops produced by the farmers in the said communities. “Isa sa strengths ng ABS (CBN) is sales and Marketing, we're media eh. And the foundation is good in community organizing. So if we work together, wala ng problema.” Gina Lopez, Chairman, ALKFI

With the help ALKFI’s Green Initiative, the partnership will also rehabilitate and build coconut hubs in certain areas of the country where coconut is abundant such as in MIMAROPA. With this facility, coconut farmers from the area will be able to produce more products such as flour, vinegar, soy sauce, etc from their crops. “Ang mga magsasaka at mangingisda ang naapektuhan maigi ng bagyo kaya sila ang dapat na tulungan. Yung mga pera na nakolekta, dapat mapunta sa kanila at dapat may value added, kailangan may bibili kaya kailangan may sales and marketing. This partnership between PCA, BFAR and ABS-CBN Foundation is a marriage made in heaven for the country.” Lopez added.

(The farmers and fishermen are the ones heavily affected by typhoon Yolanda. They are the ones that need help. The money we collected should go to them plus the added value. The crops need to be sold so there should be someone who will take care of the sales and marketing. This partnership between PCA, BFAR and ABS-CBN Foundation is a marriage made in heaven for the country.)
