PEZA and Bantay Kalikasan to promote sustainable program on environmental protection
The virtual Memorandum of Agreement signing was headed by PEZA Director General Charito Plaza, AFI Managing Director Susan Afan, PEZA-BCEZ Deputy Administrator Allan Datahan, AFI Chief Finance Officer Angelita Lara, and AFI Cental Marketing Head Paul Mercado.
Bantay Kalikasan, founded by environmentalist Gina Lopez, is the environmental program of ABS-CBN Foundation.
The Memorandum of Agreement was signed by both parties on Friday, September 25, coinciding with the World Environmental Health Day celebration on September 26, 2020.
The partnership will benefit Bantay Baterya, Bantay Langis and WEEE (Waste, Electrical and Electronic Equipment) Recovery Project of Bantay Kalikasan through collection of hazardous wastes.
"To fully industrialize the country, it is not really the money that we are after but the responsible utilization of our natural resources so that this will be sustainable. They will be industrialized but in an eco-friendly manner. In PEZA, there are two things that are non-negotiable and these are the rights of the Filipino workers and the protection of the environment," announced PEZA Director General Charito Plaza.
"This year, we are launching the first recyclable event to sustain our green eco-zone and we aim to replicate this program PEZA-wide and in regular schedules in the coming years," said Mr. Allan Datahan, Economic Zone Deputy Administrator of Baguio City Economic Zone.
"We have been doing this for 20 years through the guidance of our chief inspirational officer, Gina Lopez, who had always been protecting our trees, our water, and our land. We are so glad that PEZA has joined our team in becoming eco-warriors," expressed Susan Afan, managing director of ABS-CBN Foundation.
"PEZA would like to express its sincerest gratitude for the continued support of organizations like ABS-CBN Foundation, Environmental Management Bureau, Department of Health and World Health Organization Philippines, in our goal to create and promote green, healthy, sustainable and smart economic zones," said Plaza.
The Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) is a government agency attached to the Department of Trade and Industry that has been created to help promote investments in the export-oriented manufacturing industry into the country by assisting investors in registering and facilitating their business operations and providing tax incentives.
Companies operating in the economic zones which want to support this advocacy may start safely storing their recyclable and hazardous wastes for consolidated hauling during the Recyclable Collection Event. PEZA-Baguio City Economic Zone plan to have their 2nd recyclable event in 2021 as part of next year’s World Environmental Day celebration.
