In celebration of Bantay Kalikasan’s 20th Anniversary, the employees of ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation Inc. (ALFKI) recently visited at the La Mesa Watershed and La Mesa Eco Park to plant trees and participate in an Earth Warrior training facilitated by ALKFI-Bantay Kalikasan.

The tree planting activity was organized as part of celebrating the 20th anniversary of Bantay Kalikasan, ALKFI’s environment arm. Johanna Jeraldine Santos, Program Director of Bantay Kalikasan said that the employees covered almost 500 meters over 2,700 hectares of the Watershed.

According to Portia Rutaquio, Post Production Officer of ALKFI, she learned that planting trees helps preserve the water consumed by more than 12 million Metro Manila residents because La Mesa Watershed is their source of potable water.

Rutaquio shared, “Nakapagtanim ako ng mga pitong puno ngayong araw na ito. At ayon ‘dun sa- sa mga forester natin 92% daw ang survival rate nito." (I planted seven saplings today. And according to the foresters, these saplings have a survival rate of 92%)

David Azurin, Save the La Mesa Watershed Project’s Program Operations Head said that the tree planting season has a timetable. “The time to plant trees is only until the end of September for technical reasons. October of the current year to June of the next year is the chance for the seedlings to develop their root system. This way, the root system will be rightly developed when it’s summertime,” he explained.

“This time table is also one of the reasons why we have a high percentage of survival of the trees,” Azurin added.

Susan Bautista-Afan, Managing Director of ALFKI stated, “...The mere fact na nakatulong ka in a small way na magtanim ng isang puno dito man lang sa La Mesa Watershed, eh napaka-gandang experience.” (The mere fact that you got to help in a small way like to plant a tree here at La Mesa Watershed was already a wonderful experience.)

She also expressed her gratitude to all of the employees who became part of the celebration and participated in the said activities. “Maraming maraming salamat sa lahat ng mga empleyadong sumama sa amin ngayon para makapag-celebrate ng 20th year ng Bantay Kalikasan dito sa La Mesa Watershed and Eco Park.” (Thank you very much to all the employees who joined us today to celebrate the 20th year of Bantay Kalikasan here at La Mesa Watershed and Eco Park.)

“Sana kayo ay nabigyan ng inspirasyon para patuloy na gawin natin ang ating trabaho, at makiisa sa mga adbokasiya at ginagawa ng Bantay Kalikasan,” she added. (I hope that you gained inspiration to continue our work and be part of the advocacies of Bantay Kalikasan.)

The tree planting activity was followed by the Earth Warrior Training. It is an activity that trains and develops teamwork among the participants through different team-building activities. One of the objectives of the different activities is to teach the participants to not give up easily on things they have started and to continue them with passion. It also molds the participants to become stewards of the environment.

Staying true to its slogan that Every Filipino, An Earth Warrior, the celebration of Bantay Kalikasan's 20th anniversary is a strong representation of the Filipinos’ effort to work together and help preserve the environment.

Bantay Kalikasan is the environment arm of ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation, Inc. Aside from protecting the environment by promoting environmental stewardship, it also provides livelihood to the communities and collaborates with partners to build stronger networks.
