The battle with worms in children’s stomachs has been going on for a long time but still exists until today.

According to Neglected Tropical Disease department of the Philippine General Hospital, as of 2014, 11 million school children are infected with intestinal worms. In order to help, Bantay Bata 163 and the British Embassy Manila headed by Ambassador Asif Ahmad joined forces to lead a de-worming activity at Justo Lukban Elementary School in Paco, Manila.

With the aim to improve Filipino children’s health, chewable tablets that will kill and flush out the worms were handed out to the students during the activity. This is also in support of “War on Worms”, a nationwide de-worming campaign of the Department of Health in schools.

Unclean surroundings, walking barefoot, and eating uncooked food are some of the reasons why children get infected with worms. Parasitism affects the nutrition and leads to absenteeism and poor performance in class. With this, during the months of July to January of the school year, Justo Lukban Elementary School conducted a regular de-worming activity where in parents and students were also told about its importance.
Ambassador Asif Ahmad would like to emphasize that the worms we should see are the only worms that help the plants to grow and not those that weakens one’s body.

Ambassador Ahmad said: “I’ve seen with my own eyes not just in the Philippines but in many other countries what the effect of worms can be on children. It’s on their growth. It means that valuable food is wasted.”

Every child has the right to be healthy. Bantay Bata 163 envisions creating a better and happier world for the children not only by saving them from the clutches of abuse but also by helping them improve their health condition. This is not only out of compassion but by carrying out programs intelligently and responsibly, which creates a difference to the lives of children and families, with all the help from the partners and donors who has been with them since 1997.
